We headed to Oregon in August 2019. Took off on Friday, August 2 (leaving the pooch with the family we got her from). We spent our first night in La Grande.
 |
Drove by the old family home at 1005 L Avenue. Looking pretty scroungy. And now painted green and completely overshadowed by those huge trees. Grandpa Hiatt would be appalled.

Quite a contrast from how the house looked in 1992....

It was the Union County Fair weekend (always the first weekend in August), and on the way to dinner we stopped and watched a bit of the Fair parade as it made its leisurely way down Adams Avenue. Emma and I practiced our rodeo royalty parade waves. (My arm is in a sling because I busted my collarbone in a tumble down the stairs on July 24.)
We spent the night at Stang Manor (the former Baum mansion, where Gen. David Baum and wife Jeanette raised their family. Now it's a bed and breakfast.)

We drove to Portland the next morning and met up with Aunt Julie downtown at Saturday Market.
Julie then took Emma home to Vancouver with her, and Joe and I had a (very belated) anniversary dinner at Salty's on the Columbia River waterfront.

We went to church with Julie and Tom the next day. Later that afternoon Joe and Emma took a stroll along the Salmon Creek Greenway Trail.
 |
Julie made a wonderful Sunday dinner, and we relaxed outside with their pooch, Greggy (that's short for "Gregoire").

Later that afternoon, we drove to Oceanside, where we'd reserved an Airbnb house. Julie followed us in her car and spent the next two nights with us.
Drove around Oceanside that evening, and walked on the beach a bit.

Monday, August 5, was crabbing at Netarts Bay. Didn't get a ton of crabs, but enough to have dinner that night at the house.

Tuesday morning, August 6, Julie and Emma got up early to go tide-pooling. Julie then headed back to Vancouver and we drove 70 miles down the coast to Newport, Oregon. Did some shopping, ate at a picturesque little restaurant with lots of buoys out front, and strolled around by the bridge.

Emma really liked the souvenir Newport hoodie she bought.

This photo was on our Christmas card for 2019.
On Wednesday, August 7, we drove 148 miles south to Port Orford, where we spent the afternoon at the beach and stayed at a quaint little place called Castaway by the Sea. It had a spiral staircase going to the second floor. |
The next day, Thursday, August 8, we headed southeast to Klamath Falls and the Running Y Resort, and made a stop at Crater Lake along the way.

The next morning we headed home, via Oregon Route 140 across southern Oregon. It was a starkly beautiful drive, some of it quite steep.
Drove straight through from Klamath Falls, picked up our poochie girl, and headed home. It was a great trip.
